The Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary Research Scientist/Engineer 1 to join their team.

The Research Scientist/Engineer 1 will participate in experimental research in the field of neurodegeneration, with a focus on Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Our goals are to understand how proteinopathies such as TDP43, amyloid and tau pathology contribute to degeneration, cognitive decline and how such contributions change with aging.

We are looking for a new member of our research team to join us in researching structural and molecular bases of cognitive impairment that occurs with age and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease. The scope of work will be mostly focused on analyzing tissue-level changes associated with aging and neurodegeneration and involves tissue processing for immunofluorescence and immuno-histochemistry based analyses (mostly cryo-sectioning of mouse brains), antibody-based staining of histological sections and data analysis. Additional duties are related to the overall focus of the lab to work with in vivo mouse models of aging and neurodegeneration and can evolve as needed.

Job Duties:
Scientific Research Activities (80%)

---A major focus is on tissue processing for histology analyses, sectioning of processed tissue with a cryostat and performing immune-histochemistry and immune-fluorescence stains on sectioned tissue together with microscopy-based analyses.
---Under general supervision, perform experiments and procedures according to documented protocols. Experiments and procedures include Maintaining colony of laboratory mice (animal husbandry), genotyping of mutant mouse strains, planning and conducting mouse behavior testing, tissue harvesting and processing - with a focus on histological work-flows.
--- Under general supervision, perform scientific investigative procedures such as validation of the techniques outlined above through interpretation of the results - notify supervisor or senior lab members if results are not agreeable with experimental goals.
--- Assist in troubleshooting problems that arise in research protocols and report problems to the Lab head.
--- Assist supervisor and/or senior lab members in developing techniques including histology and behavior tests.
--- Participate in writing reports about new assay development and continuing data collection and interpretation; participate in presentations to peers and supervisor both at formal lab meetings and informal meetings with colleagues.
--- Operate and maintain necessary instruments utilized in scientific studies of laboratory experiments, including PCR thermocyclers, centrifuges, microtome and mouse-behavior testing instruments.
--- Maintain detailed lab records.

Other Duties (20%)

--- Update specimen inventory.
--- Inventory reagents and supplies.
--- General lab cleaning and maintenance.
--- Operate ancillary equipment such as computers, printers, etc.
--- Perform related duties as required.
--- Attend and participate in lab meetings.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Neuroscience, or related field AND one (1) year of relevant experience, OR Equivalent combination of education and experience.


Specific knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job satisfactorily include:

Histology (preparation of tissue for cryo-sectioning and staining procedures based on antibody binding) and microscopy, PCR, some experience with mouse behavior.

Knowledge, skills and abilities that are desirable, providing for an enhanced level of job performance, include:

Preparation of datasets for conferences and publications.
